Keeping your dog mentally engaged is just as important as physical exercise. The best part? You don’t need to spend money on fancy toys—common household items can turn into exciting enrichment activities!

Important Tip: Use Small, Budget-Friendly Treats!

For all these games, always use pea-sized treats to prevent overfeeding and keep your dog engaged without getting full too quickly. If you’re on a budget, try:

✔ Hot dogs (cut into tiny pieces)

✔ Peanut butter mixed with flour (rolled into small bits)

✔ Plain kibble (if your dog is food-motivated)

Maintain a Healthy Weight

If you’re using treats for mental games, reduce your dog’s regular food portion to balance their daily calorie intake. This ensures they stay at a healthy weight while still getting their full nutritional needs.

1. Treat Dispenser Puzzle

Supplies:

• Plastic container with a lid (e.g., yogurt or sour cream tub)

• Scissors or knife

• Kibble

Steps:

1. Wash and dry the container.

2. Cut small holes in the lid or sides, just big enough for kibble to fall out.

3. Add a handful of kibble and secure the lid.

4. Let your dog roll it around to release the treats.

For large dogs, use a milk jug for extra durability!

2. Destruction Box

Supplies:

• Empty cardboard box (cereal, cracker, or shipping box)

• Treats or kibble

• Tape (optional)

Steps:

1. Remove any plastic liners from the box.

2. Place a few treats inside and close it.

3. Hand it to your dog and let them tear it open to find the goodies.

Supervise to prevent them from eating the cardboard.

3. Muffin Tin Puzzle

Supplies:

• Muffin tin

• Tennis balls

• Kibble

Steps:

1. Place treats in some or all of the muffin tin cups.

2. Cover each filled cup with a tennis ball.

3. Encourage your dog to remove the balls to find the hidden snacks.

This game is great for problem-solving and nose work!

4. Towel Roll-Up

Supplies:

• Old towel

• Treats

Steps:

1. Lay the towel flat and scatter treats across it.

2. Roll it up loosely, hiding the treats inside.

3. Let your dog unroll it to find the food.

A great beginner-level brain game!

5. Hide-and-Seek

No supplies needed—just you and your dog!

1. Have your dog sit and stay.

2. Find a hiding spot and call their name.

3. Let them use their nose and problem-solving skills to track you down.

Great for building recall and engagement!

6. Cup Shuffle Game

Supplies:

• Three cups

• One small treat

Steps:

1. Place the treat under one cup.

2. Shuffle the cups around.

3. Let your dog choose the correct cup.

This is a great test of memory and scent work!

7. “Find It” Scent Game

Supplies:

• Treats

Steps:

1. While your dog watches, hide a treat under a blanket, behind furniture, or in another room.

2. Say “Find it!” and encourage them to use their nose.

3. Gradually increase difficulty by hiding treats in trickier places.

Perfect for building confidence and problem-solving skills!

8. Hot and Cold Game (For Smart Dogs!)

Supplies:

• Target object

• Kibble

Steps:

1. Pick an object and place it on the floor.

2. Reward your dog when they look at or move toward it.

3. For advanced play, reward only when they touch it with a specific action (nose, paw, rolling it, etc.).

This game sharpens problem-solving and training focus!

9. DIY Obstacle Course

Use household items like chairs, pillows, broomsticks, and boxes to create a simple course with tunnels, jumps, and weaves. Guide your dog through it using treats or toys!

10. Tug & Release Game

Supplies:

• Old towel or rope

1. Play tug-of-war with your dog.

2. Teach structured cues like “take it” and “drop it” for controlled play.

This is a great energy-burning and impulse-control exercise!

11. Stuffed Kong Toy

Supplies:

• Kong toy

• Filling options: canned food, peanut butter, kibble, pumpkin, applesauce, or cheese

Steps:

1. Fill the Kong with your chosen mixture.

2. Freeze it for a longer-lasting challenge.
